Arab League Calls for Iranian Compensation Over Regional Attacks
The position was outlined in a resolution adopted during an emergency Arab League meeting held virtually under Bahrain’s chairmanship on Tuesday.
The resolution stated that Iran bears “full international responsibility” for attacks allegedly targeting Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, and Iraq. It added that Iran is obligated under international law to provide “full reparation” for all resulting losses and damages.
The statement also condemned Iran’s actions related to maritime routes, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and threats to shut the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Arab ministers argued that such measures violate international law and the principle of freedom of navigation, with potential consequences for global energy flows and trade.
Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif Al Zayani said Iran’s actions had disrupted maritime traffic and posed risks to energy security, as well as supplies of food and medicine, while also affecting global commerce.
He further stated that Iran should be held accountable for the impact of restricting navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for international shipping.
In response, earlier reports indicated that Iran had also demanded compensation from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Bahrain, and Jordan, accusing them of involvement in hostilities against Tehran.
The broader regional situation has escalated following joint US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, which were followed by Iranian retaliatory attacks on Israel and on regional countries hosting US military assets.
Diplomatic efforts have continued alongside the tensions. Pakistan hosted the first round of peace talks on April 11 after helping broker a two-week ceasefire agreement on April 8, while negotiations for a second round remain ongoing following a recent extension of the ceasefire.
